Dear Basantjee,

Hi ! The Indian animation industry is expected to grow from the current size of US Dollar 250 million to US Dollar 950 million by 2009. Indian animation industry has a 40% cost advantage over Korea, Taiwan and Philippines. The cost of production of a 30 minute 3D programme in India is approx US Dollar 60,000 and the cost of production of the same in the U.S. is approx US Dollar 250,000 to 400,000. Given the potential for outsourcing this work to Indian companies by companies in the West and also the potential of animation in Indian entertaiment sector and the potential for animated movies in India :

A) What do you think of the scale of opportunity ?

B) Which are the Indian listed companies that can hugely benefit and can become multibaggers from here ? Crest Animation and UTV ?

Thanks & Rgds
Equity Buff

Great to hav you back. Hope you had a nice fruitful trip. ANnimation would do well because the sheer scale of opportunity is very high . But except for Crest there is no other company that could be categorsied as a pure annimation play. Tata Elizsi is also there but it derives more then 50% of its revenue from non annimation businesses. On the other hand UTV is also doing annimation as part of its overall business model. Crest we did discuss somewhere on the forum is yet to emerge in terms of scale and size. The company still seems to be evolving. But we should keep a close eye on this space because any focused player could throw up a huge opportunity in terms of stock price appreciation.

If Prime focus qualifies for this it could be the best performer. I read that the company controls around 60% of the Bollywood Visual effects market. ALso UTV!

http://www.livemint.com/2007/06/18112804/Indian-animation-takes-giant-l.html - Indian animation takes giant leap forward (live mint)

With the industry expected to grow at 30% per annum, companies like CDI are going full throttle through overseas listing and projections of making four international films a year

New Delhi: Indian Animation is making waves with films like Hanuman finding acceptance not just in the domestic market but also in the international animation arena. India has the world’s largest entertainment industry, a robust software industry and skilled manpower, which fuel the growth of the animation and special effects industry

According to an independent trade survey conducted recently, the Indian animation industry, which is now pegged at $550 million (Rs2200 crore) is expected to grow at 30% annually in the next couple of years and reach a level of $15 billion (Rs60,000 crore) by 2010.

Leader of the pack
Compact Disc India Ltd (CDI), South Asia’s largest 3D animation film outsourcing company, will list its newly incorporated company MediaOne Ventures Limited at the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange this year. This overseas listing will facilitate in raising $50 million (Rs20 crore) to uniquely position CDI in the international film production market.

At an initial investment of one million pound, MediaOne Ventures Ltd. has been launched to cater exclusively to the international film production division of CDI. This newly formed company is largely structured to produce live action and animation films for an international audience that is either wholly or jointly produced with Hollywood production houses.

Production plans
Through MediaOne Ventures Ltd., CDI plans to make four international film projects every year which will either be fully owned or co-produced with leading Hollywood film production companies.

The launch of MediaOne Ventures Ltd. will mark CDI’s foray into the booming business of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). After having secured the IPR for animation content, the company can cash in on the collaterals accrued by way of merchandise.

Indeed a very nice article and thanks to Kulman. In an interview appeared in Business Standard dated 18th June, Mr. Dino M Cordero, Dean, Toonz Animation Academy has stated "Right now animation is seeing a total boom here and that is the reason why i am here.(underlined by me)..
Five years from now perhaps India will become a major hub of animation if we just focus on the industry.

According to a survey carried out by Assocham on “ Will animation industry emerge as the next knowledge destination for jobs”, the findings revealed that the parks could alone generate employment opportunities for two lakh skilled animators within the next three years because of the industry’s potential and rising aptitude of youngsters to make a career in the field.

These parks have the capacity to generate business worth $1billion (Rs 4,000 crore) by 2010, with a CAGR of 30%. In 2006, the animation industry market size was estimated at $360 million.

Indian companies have captured around $100-110 million of business which is a small pie of nearly15 billion global animation industry

Except for Prime focus there are no pure plays available. UTV and Tata Elixsi are there but the contribution of non annimation revenues dilutes the whole story a bit.

There is a relatively unknown firm called Sanra Software. They were into losses until recently. They've rejigged their business (someone acquired it) and acquired some animation studio recently and want to give more thrust in the same. There was an open offer for the same recently (in Nov 07) by the new owner. Will post more if I get more info.

Hahaha....nice one kulman ji.

On a serious note I suppose recession should not hamper the animation industry. Afterall, will people stop watching animation movies during recession ? I dont think so.

BTW Compact Disc announced yet another project. This time to co-produce a movie with White Light Entertainment of Jurassic Park & schiendler's list fame. White Light Entertainment is the world’s largest and the most profitable studio. The production house has to its credit 19 Academy Awards and a total box office collection for the fourteen movies they have produced so far of over $ 4 billion.

Equity master had a small article on growth prospect of this sector and Prime Focus in particular in Dec 2007.

http://equitymaster.com/detail.asp?date=12/27/2007&story=2 - http://equitymaster.com/detail.asp?date=12/27/2007&story=2

...
Growth opportunity
Globally, the top 10 all time grossers are movies heavily loaded with visual effects wherein the post production and visual effects budget averaged to approximately 70% of the cost of production (Titanic, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.). A similar trend can be observed emerging in India. Three of the recent big Bollywood hits – ‘Dhoom 2’, ‘Krissh’ and ‘Don’ had visual effects of more than 50 minutes each. The VFX and animation industry in India is said to be growing at a robust rate of 38% and 25% respectively.

Increasing labour costs are forcing international production houses/VFX houses to outsource part of the work to other low cost studios. India has the competitive edge in terms of technical know-how and talent to emerge as a major outsourcing hub for entertainment technology. The cost differential for India in comparison to the UK market is as high as 6-8 times and 3-4 times for the US market. Industry experts believe that Indian entertainment technology services have the ability to grow at a CAGR of around 35% over the next 10 years.

...

with recent fall in prime focus, it may be a good oppotunity to buy...

Though this post may not be relevant here, but I feel that prime focus with its current moves and focus is going to emerge as a global indian entertainment service company. Currently the mcap is @750 cr and they are doing consolidated business of 250 cr+. If they are able to generate more profits out of their VTR acquisition, it would be a multi bagger from here on..

http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/animation-firms-buck-slowdown-see-increase-in-orders/362328/ - Animation firms buck slowdown, see increase in orders
Upasana Kaur / Mumbai June 28, 2009, 0:36 IST

70% of animation studios' revenue comes from outsourced work.

The Indian animation sector, it appears, has not been hit by the slowing economy. Rather, major players like Maya Entertainment, Tata Elxsi Visual Computing Labs, Toonz Animation India, DQ Entertainment International and Avitel have seen a rise in the number of deals in the recent months.

For instance, Mumbai-based Avitel recently set up its first post-production studio in India with an estimated net worth of Rs 750 crore. It has orders worth Rs150 crore. Avitel’s animation turnover is projected to shoot up to Rs 50 crore in 2009-2010, an increase of 400 per cent from last year’s Rs 13 crore.

Pradeep Jain, chairman and promoter of Avitel Post Studioz, feels the slowdown has been good for the animation industry in India as US studios looking to cut cost are shifting work to India.

“What this slowdown has done is to open the pre-production side of the business to Indian players. The Indian animation industry so far was restricted to the production side of the business, thus targeting only half the business. The current meltdown has opened doors for us to step into the pre-production side of the business also.”

Maya Entertainment, a leading animation studio, is another example. Jai Natrajan, Group Executive VP, Business Development and Marketing, said, “During the second half of the last fiscal, when the economic meltdown hit hard, we signed two large TV serials internationally. We recorded 30 per cent growth during the period. We also got Rs 25 crore worth of outsourcing orders.”

The Indian animation industry is currently pegged at Rs 1,740 crore and of the total revenue generated by the studios, over 70 per cent is derived from outsourcing, says the Ficci-KPMG Media and Entertainment Industry report 2009.

Analysts note that other than the cost advantage that India offers, studios here are coming up with world-class projects. A point in case being “Roadside Romeo”. Visual Effect Society had nominated Tata Elxsi for animation work in the film, along with movies like Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda and Waltz with Bashir and Bolt. The cost of producing a full-length animated movie in the US is $100-125 million, as compared with $25-30 million if work is outsourced to India.

Unlike the IT industry, where decisions have been slow and existing clients have not ramped up, the animation industry has seen the opposite. “We received repeat orders from our existing partners as well as several new productions,” said Sumedha Saraogi, vice-president, Management Office, DQ Entertainment International.

Saraogi agreed that while deal sizes had remained the same, the quantum of work had risen. “The deal size could vary depending on the format and the length of production as well as the scope of work that is outsourced. On an average, the deals are from Rs 4.7 crore to Rs 24 crore ($1-5 million),” she said.

Analysts agreed that while the outsourced business had not been impacted, a lot of changes had been introduced in the deals. “In many cases, prices have been renegotiated. Where one cannot do that, firms are looking at reducing cost. Firms may look at reducing the number of takes for creating a character or reduce the number of characters in the project. But one positive that has happened for the industry is that a number of small players that had mushroomed during the hype period have had to close down due to pricing pressures.”

“We have also signed co-production agreements for several 2D/ 3D projects. So, we have not been much affected by the ongoing crisis, except for some minor delays in fund flows,” said P Jaykumar, CEO, Toonz Animation India.

No free lunch: I have a (small) interest in Tata Elxsi.

Looks like Tata Elxsi was "grilled" and here's their reply ...

Subject:     Tata Elxsi clarifies on News Item

IF they really do $400m this can become a ten-bagger. But I smell something fishy in this projections/announcement.

1. Company did less than this kind of growth in 6 years instead of 3-4 years(that they are projecting) and that too on lower base, in the best growth period of outsourcing(other than writing software codes).

2. Recent result shows de-growth. So what is catalyst for V shaped recovery? Company is having wonderful ROI and business. But to grow from $90m to 400m with investment of $5m!! Can't digest.

If I get this wrong this is a stock to buy. But will wait for proof and willing to pay higher price.

About the extent of growth in IT sectors I was just studying an old report of 2007 titled as " Indian IT and ICT industry: A performance analysis Using data Envelopment analysis Malmquist Index" by Mr. Somesh Mathur Volume 7 Issue 2 Article 3" from where I understand that size and past history does not influence Technical efficiencies  (though size may matter for export) and I believe with Technical efficiencies it is possible to achieve higher growth than expected.

Yes I saw that but somehow not able to digest. But again I will be watching keenly and won't seat on my opinion if see things changing.

If $5m studio can do this wonder what were they waiting for to open studio? Why now? don't pay dividend and open another studio!

Posted By: Hitesh Shah
Date Posted: 05/Dec/2009 at 11:05am
There seems to be a problem here.

Even though I'm not skilled at figures, it seems that the $300-400 turnover in 3-4 years refers to the "company as a whole" and not to the $5m studio.

And since dividend payment has been mentioned, quite gratuitously, those who aren't in favour of dividend payout may prefer some other animation company that promises but doesn't pay ... Tongue

The animation industry in the UK consists of a workforce that stretches across many of the sectors in the creative media industries. You will find animated content on television, in feature films, commercials, websites and computer or video games. Just over 2000 people work in animation in the UK, nearly half of them freelance, and there are currently more than 300 companies producing a range of work.

Animation is a relatively small sector that is growing in success and popularity. More flexible scheduling by broadcasters has increased opportunities for animators and the internet provides another platform for short and experimental work. Big-budget features such as Toy Story have enjoyed great commercial success and 2002 saw the introduction of the first ever Oscar for an animated feature, won by Dreamwork’s Shrek.

The Animation Sector can be roughly divided into four main disciplines:

  • 2D drawn or traditional;
  • 2D computer generated
  • stop frame; and
  • 3D computer generated.
Most companies will concentrate on one discipline and but some studios do all four.

There are a wide range of freelance, some contract, and some more permanent jobs in animation. These can be found at small production companies, larger studios, computer generated post production facility houses and at computer games developers or interactive media designers.

Again flat year and flat Q!!! Still wondering how they came to conclusion of $400 in 3-4 years!!! There is not traction at all! And thing had changed for many companies in this Q so they can not blame bad economic conditions!

Many Tata companies have been told to develop vision 2015 or something on those lines, Titan, TRF, Elxsi etc etc. I cant remember exactly but TCS was late by many years too to reach that vision. Could have used a pair from VisionExpress or TitanEye

IS anybody tracking Crest Animation. Any view on the worldwide release of the first feature film Alpoha and Omega. Risk and return looks attractive in this scrip. Movie released in Oct 2010. DB shaw has invested at 130 few years back. They would be looking for a good exit price.

Beside Crest is focused on co production of feature films in collaboration with Lion Gates.

Scrip quoting at 77 after touching a high of 104. Should give good returns in the next 6 months.
