A nation coming out of three decades of struggle wil provide the biggest opportunities in companies focussed on the domestic sector not exporters. Its the same logic of investing in Infosys for India's growth!WHat are their equivalents of our L&T, BHEL, Nestle, HDFC Bank? Any idea?

Personally I do not like tea companies unless one is betting in and out. Over a period of 5-10 years they underperform the sensex and getting in and out for me is as much luck as skill.

Anyway we need a special topic for Sri Lanks. Is there any dedicated website for any of their stock exchanges or something like we have Moneycontrol or lnks to their top MF holdings (if at all there exists one).

If none of these exist then it is more  a case for being bullish.

I doubt if any MF will be able to bet well there the best thing to do will be to buy out their index or put US $ XXX each into their top 50 companies by market cap!!!

The Milanka Price Index is one of the principal stock indices of the Colombo Stock Exchange in Sri Lanka. It is composed of a select group of 25 stocks, a list which is reviewed each quarter, as opposed to the Colombo Stock Exchange's "All Share Price Index", which uses all of the ~250 stocks on the exchange to calculate an index value.

i think war-torn country will first try to build infrastructure and they can always find money to do it as many agencies and countries would be willing to support the program. Best is to find quality infra play like road builders, home builders, electricity generators etc. and after finding it we need to explore how could we invest being an Indian citizen

With the expected growth in business in Sri Lanka, Indian companies who are already present there eg Lanka IOC (running a number of petrol stations), Lankan Ashok Leyland (manufacturing bus bodies), Tatas (Hotels & tea plantations) etc should also do well.

Bharti Airtel may also be bidding for their largest mobile network operator Millicom.

Bajaj Auto is a big player in Sri Lanka. All the three wheelers you see on the road are Brand Bajaj in addition to their scooters and Motorcycles. Also Maruti is big brand there.

This is what I observed during my Lanka visit 2 years back.

Maybe all indian companies would be working that way. L&T could also be present there. Ambuja does transport cement to the island nation  though.

This is largely due to India's ambiguous role in the recent conflict. I think China is outflanking us in numerous ways.

How stable would the Srilankan Rupee be in future?  If it falls against the dollar, stock market profits could shrink.

I guess Sri Lanka is great place for a nice vacation. (I would have a gala time jumping all over the place!!Wink) With war over, tourism should thrive. I am not sure whether Indian hotels has any presence over there. Other area comes to my mind are agri-commodities. (Afterall that is what Monkeys like most!!Wink) Whatever may be the case, it is diffcult to play the story indirectly. I hope someone offers Sri Lankan index ETF in India.

Purvankara said on TV yesterday that it is getting into low cost housing in Sri lanka. Now the question is what percentage of its total revenue can come from there?

"I am not buying any emerging markets (EMs). If I were to buy EMs I had recently gone to Sri Lanka to look at it as an EM. I have not bought anything there but the Sri Lanka market has been extremely strong in the last year. Most EMs have been very strong in the past year after the collapse or the fall of 2008, most EMs have gone up a lot. I don’t like to buy anything that has gone up a lot. I am very worried about the Western economy, I don’t think that the problems are solved in the West and if you start seeing more problems in the West, it is going to have an effect on most markets around the world as certainly some of the EMs. The EMs, which have a lot of raw materials or commodities would probably do better than the others but again even they will be affected if we have more problems in the West."

Says Jim Rogers in an interview to CNBC-TV18.

It seems tourism is the most thriving sector in SriLanka now. I had been to Lanka last year. Plenty of international tourists and the hotel persons say the numbers are better than the earlier year.
Apart from big hotels, we couldnt see much high rise buildings.
Roads are well constructed (some roads, mainly southern highways, constructed after the tsunami tragedy), but not so wide. Traffic is not that heavy (For me, who went from India !!!).
Autos of most indian and foreign manufacturers are there on the roads. They say many have been used cars. For used cars import duty is less. One brand new Swift when imported cost them around 10 lakhs (in Rs).
And then they say gem exporting is a revenue source, but I dont know how organised and gainful that sector is.

What I understood is that they are projecting their cultural heritage,  beaches and tea internationally for attraction of tourists. And there are many as a result. Also, Colombo University attracts many foreign students (course fee is cheap ?)...
