Hi Basant ji...

I see the site has a new layout and really like it. The look and feel of the new site is beautiful and practical.

Congratulations and thanks for the wonderful medium of communication and sharing of knowledge. It is a boon for investor like me who do not have a finance back ground.

Hope it improves and keeps growing for years to come.

Cheers

Basantji, I've just viewed TED with Internet Explorer 6, Google Chrome, the latest Firefox and another browser, K-Meleon.

Except for IE6, the others had a problem with ads overlapping the topic area.

With IE6, it is okay but designed for a broad screen which is not really necessary, in my humble opinion.

That's all for now...

Thanks, there are still some small bugs here and there but I am sure the backend guys wil be able to fix them up. I am listing the changes that have happened:

1) A blog where I will try and write something more frequently (as if I do not right now)!

2) The forum gets more coverage on the home page with the three main subforums being listed with the 20 most active topics of each of these sub forums.

3) Most Active Teddies as per a) All time and b) Last one month so it would be nice if peole can upload their photos instead of the images. Many fund managers visit the site so maybe they would be able to spot you while you are crossing the road. But Teddies who have been more critical of that so called "expert" better watch out for that fund manager who is on the wheels with an accelerator before you cross that road!

4) Most participated Topics since the forum has been born. Needless to say we have PRIL and TV18 there.

5) In (4)  above the listing narrows down as you move to the subforums to the most active topics within the subforum.

6) Teddies who have started new topics can view them in terms of participation on the forum pages.

7) We have a space for bookmarking and emailing the pages and sharing it on yahoo, diggit etc.

8) A couple of new features are still being added and should be up soon.

9) Plus we have the advertisements flowing more freely then before.Embarrassed

Basant jee, I dont think I need to mention it again but TED is going the right way. Looks great & I am sure the bits and pieces here and there that need to be improved will be changed as time goes by. I would be eagerly looking out for that "self-blog" of yours and your thoughts from time to time.

Very Happy for TED. Jai Ho TEDdies!!!Clap

Basant ji,

Congrates on a great new TED look. One suggestion here - in earlier version, after visiting a link, colour of the link was changed which was very helpful to track if a page was already visited by me.

Now in the New TED, both the new links and the already visited link colour is same. Now it is a bit hard to figure out if a link has already been visited as the colour of the link does not change.

Congrats Basant on the new look TED!  Its a refreshing change! Clap

Some suggestions from my side:
1. When we go to any thread, it shows the first page, i think its better
it goes to the last page.

2. Time needs to be changed to IST, as kulman has mentioned above.

Nice look and easier to navigate.

Suggestions:

How about content page in alphabetical order with a window on the opening page?

New topics started should come with a flashing red indicator and stay that way for a month or so.

Pages need to be made compatible with Firefox.

Love the my topics/most participated topics list on the right.

The new disign is nice too but i m missing the old banner.

Also...if the main forum page could show the last topic of each subforum....i think it would be nice.

Will keep on updating if i find anything else.

Excellent new look!!

I had a suggestion for a feature. Can we have a link at each forum that takes directly to the last page. Currently, I have to scroll the page number dropdown, then select the last page number and then click to reach the last page.

Basant Ji, I did not knew you are a computer wizard as well !!

The "Contacts" tab next to the "Report Card" tab is linking to http://www.theequitydesk.com/forum/contact.asp - www.theequitydesk.com/forum/contact.asp instead of http://www.theequitydesk.com/contact.asp - http://www.theequitydesk.com/contact.asp . So it gives a 'Page Not Found' error message.

You will see this problem only when you click on the 'Forum' link first and then try to click on the 'Contacts' tab. From the home page, the link to 'Contacts' tab seems to be fine.

The search engine facility of TED sucks. Basant should incorporate the google search engine on the site. Now if I want to say, check up L&T on TED, I go to google and enter L&T and theequitydesk.com and the the appropriate thread comes up. On the other hand entering anything on TED's search box throws up the wrong thread!

I hear couple of people had problems using the new site on Firefox...I use Firefox 3.0.5 and every thing seems to be fine...no overlapping or layout issues.

My Topic on right is very useful.

Don't like the google ads in the centre of the screen below Global Announcements tab.

The layout of links at the top of Forum page having Logout, PM and Search can be changed to bring the actual forum links a little up in the page because there are 2 lines of google ads in between them and the contents.

One issue that i have noticed is that there is a horizontal scrollbar in the browser. I am using firefox.

I have myself developed a few websites and horizontal scrollbar is an absolute no no. The reason is that if you are reading text that spans from end to end, then you will have to scroll to read each line and that can be very irritating.

Just my 2 paisa.

I am using the screen resolution 1280x1024 and have a wide 16:9 screen monitor. This might be the reason why I don't see the horizontal scroll bar or overlapping issues.

Another layout suggestion would be on home page the Why Join Us box be the same span as Success Stories and the Google ads shifted to the right of The Equity Desk Global Announcement box...this will reduce the wrapping of the text in the 5 points. The current wrapped text is increasing the length of the page.

PS: I have a 19'' monitor Smile hence the display settings and I hate IE.

Basantji, the problem with the "printable version" still remains.

In other words, if a topic is running into several pages, this option currently give us the chance to save approximately the first 12  pages as one catenated file. But there is no option to save subsequently pages of each topic as a catenated file. Saving each page is too cumbersome.

Please see what can be done. Because several topics merit reading off-line as well!

Overall site is dam neat. Great Effort.

The new site has user stickiness and i have one small suggestion to imitate some of ideas from stackoverflow.com for eg: when i post questions in that forum and if i get the answer it will automatically refresh it self [like Gmail] [they are using ajax].

I request you to spend some time on stackoverflow to gain some ideas.

Thank you.

Hi Tigershark,

I can buy a closed factory company, if I get it at my price. Here at least some work is happening.

Its like this, when you get a company at discount to book value, it implies a few things:

1.There are certain assets whose realisable values may not be as good as the book value on the balance sheet

And/or

2.There may be certain liabilities which are understanded or contingent liabilities have a fair chances of materialising

And/or

3.There is a very good chance that future losses may be large enough to wipe off the positive difference that exists between book value and market value.

Now, just think about it......what if none of the things hold true, and the company may just amble across with normal profits. the gap will only widen, making it all the more attractive. So, by assuming all the negative things in my calculation, I try to get a decent margin of safety.

Just think about a SRF or a Cosmo films or a Voith Paper. The profits may have remained more or less the same, or there may be a slight drop, but still the profits are in the positive territory. So, with every quarter my game is becoming more and more attractive and I dont mind falling prices at all. SRF actually in buying back and cancelling the shares, and at a time, when most of the companies are diluting equity. Alongwith that, they are setting up capacities in their field when everyone is busy in deferring the plans of capital expenditure.

Cosmo films has announced an acquisition just on 29th of this month. The company is earning quite well. As and when crude prices stabilise, they will make a windfall.

Voith is another company which will also benefit immensely if rupee appreciates. The company is trading at nearly 60 p.c. discount to book, is debt free and is earning well enough for this price.

All i want my companies is to keep eaning profits , big or small and if they are making losses, attempt should be there to contain and stem the losses. And on top of it, I want them cheap. The thing is, you should be so convinced when you make an entry that your conviction only increases on price dips. But for that to happen, that conviction has to be totally your own.

Automobile Corporation would limp back to normalcy as and when the demand for buses come up. My big fear is that the dharwad plant of Tata Marcopolo has started operations. So, I dont know Tatas will be able to justify keeping 2 body building plants in such a scenario and should try to synergise productions. They have put so much money in the rights issue, so i dont think they will allow this company to bleed to death.

I am still to firm up my mind on this one, though. When telco is available at 150, why shall I think about Automobile corporation, is the question I am seeking an answer to.

good change, by the location of the "most vistited topics" area seems problematic.... makes it difficult to click on the reply button( i am using IE for browsing) suggest that the drop down list could be hidden normally and would be visible only on moving the cursor on the link, something like the icons at the bottom bar of Windows....

Congrats Basantji and all TED Members.

I have one suggestion -
There should be one data file in excel available on TED containing all compnaies discussed here's data in tabular form with CMP,NP ratios for 3 years ,EPS for last three years and current 3 quarters and expected EPS for 2009,10,11 and like other ratios,so it will be easy to understand and compare.
