Exiting TV-18 is a good decision. Entering into voltas......a bit dicey. I think as Blue Star was already there, a sectoral diversification of the portfolio would have been better.

Now wait for Ratan Tata do his bit to take Voltas to the front pages of WSJ, FT, Forbes, etc.

Then the halo over Basant's head will start getting bigger.....

Basant Ji
No idea of the valuation of the new entrant (Your study and judgement must be correct here because VOLTAS is a known and reputed name)

BUT REPLACING "TV 18" IS DEFINATELY VERY GOOD MOVE AND BOLD DECISION.

Keep the spirit up, sir!

We will do a valuation exercise on the newcommer. SOmetimes it is difficult to let go of a stock in which you have made more then a 15 bagger but then we do have to seggrergate emotion from reason!

My capital in this market has been made in Pantaloon and TV18. But then we need to move ahead (rather then fight with fundamentals) and this is what I tried to do.

Basant Ji
It needs lot of guts to detach your emotional attachment from 15 bagger and you have done it by accepting certain realities of fundamentals.
Hats off to you!
I also tried the same in case of Dabur's but failed (May be fundamentals still don't justify such an action)

Seven stock investment ideas from today's edition of BS:

1. Aban Offshore
2. ABB
3. HDFC BANK
4. IDFC
5. RPL
6. TITAN
7. VOLTAS

I guess Basant must be happy with this, as it contains 3 of his core holdings! Smile

Anyway, i am reproducing only the Voltas details, for those interested in
the other 6, you can get it from
http://specials.rediff.com/money/2008/apr/01mkt1.htm%20 - http://specials.rediff.com/money/2008/apr/01mkt1.htm

Voltas, the engineering and air-conditioning major, is expected to gain immensely from the rising capital expenditure across sectors like retail, IT and entertainment, and higher infrastructure spending in India and other emerging markets such as West Asia.

Being the second largest player in the Indian organised heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) market after Blue Star, the company is expected to reap benefits of immense opportunities in the air conditioning market, especially the non-residential segment, which is expected to almost triple to Rs 37,600 crore (Rs 376 billion) in the next five years.

Apart from HVAC, Voltas will also gain from the growth in the construction activities, which in turn throw up opportunities in the fledgling MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) industry.

The company has established itself in its MEP business, which is growing at 40 per cent year-on-year, which had an order book of Rs 3,500 crore (Rs 35 billion) (international orders worth Rs 2,700 crore (Rs 27 billion) and Rs 800 crore (Rs 8 billion) worth of domestic orders) as on December 2007.

To its credit, the company has executed orders at nine out of the ten domestic airports, and is currently working on the upcoming international airport at Hyderabad.

The total investment of Rs 40,800 crore (Rs 408 billion) planned towards airports over the next five years reflects a huge market and hence, growth potential for players including Voltas and Blue Star.

Also, Voltas, which commands a 17 per cent share in the air-conditioner market, should benefit from increased consumer spending. All this put together indicate strong growth prospects for Voltas.

Firstly TV18's trigger were in its internet rpoperties Web18 that is still to show some traction whatever revenue they are making is from moneycontrol and power your trade both are what we can call cyclical; secondly CAS is nowhere in place; thirdly employee costs with a couple of new busienss channels is bound to go up; fourthly any market decline will directlky affect revenue and profuits' fifthly all this while company raiuse capital for growth but once markets are down such an exercise will be futile. AT these valuations also it trades at 30+times Fy09.
