I may sound like a complete noob, but how do people know about the holding of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala in such detail?
Just curious.

rj is the best investor i can think of.a shrewd investor.but its no simple as he looks.and his holdings.he thinks simple.thats his best move.

u just know his portfolio which are in his name.u never know what stocks he might be holding in others name.

they will reflect in his name when he will sell them in others name and buy in his name.mere book entry.and people will be gungo about his new buy.

he is a man who wont tell his wife what he buys.how can u feel that u know his holdings by public document of shareholders.he is not a fool.he knows people will come to know his holding only through shareholder lists.

the one way to make money is to be in touch with management.and that means a lot.can any mgt entertain u .ask urself.they wont even talk to u on phone.
hence there is someting we in india know what we mean by management meets etc etc.

and why is that his stocks we know know after they have moved up 3-8 times.now now.titan people are buying because they know he has holding.thats all.why is he not adding titan to portfolio.only people are raising tha rates in his name so that he can exit.

Few thoughts on RJ as per my observation alone:

1) In intial phase RJ must be exceptionally lucky as per Taleb's MF Mgr theory, whatever he has touched must have turned gold. Reason for this beleif is that unlike WB, RJ's starting days is not documented anywhere.

2) #1 does not mean RJ is junk, hes smart and once he reached to a certian level started gaining access to mgmt of many new start ups in new domain. Such inside info has made him VC rather than retail investor.

3) I beleive, RJ theory seems to be investing in growth in niche area and playing by smart probability rather than anything else. If you invest in 5-10 new start up then few losses will be overtaken by huge gains.

4) Most important is RJ's optimism, it comes if one makes huge money and inspires you to remain invested for pretty long term and make you calm amidst volatility.

Overall RJ plays dangerous games one can not find comforting words like value, margin of safety etc. so difficult to copy for many small retail investor.

In the whatever its RJ is poster boy for indian investor due to his sheer success.

Well he may have his tactics. But he did take the risk needed at the times when he couldn't afford those tactics. Your points are well taken that a retail investor shouldn't follow him for own investments. And he himself says that he and you are different and you shouldn't follow him. What more you want him to say ??? I still fail to understand why accuse him of anything when its the other investor do the wrong (as u see it). Market is bigger than titan; so I would say forget the titan its only the small part.

Yes, Titan is 0.15% of the total market cap of Indian companies.
