Mr. Kulman: Warren Buffet seems to have started as a pure value person and gradually evolved to growth at a reasonable price camp- looking for high quality sustainable growth.

You are right, Deepinsight.

'Evolved' is a key word there.

Manish dave mentioned this a few days back on some thread He said that Charlie Munger was the dividing force behind the Buffet of today and Buffet himself accepted that going by that strict value theory he would not have been able to do what he has done.

I beleive value is a function of price. And value is a terribly misunderstood term. A growth will be a growth only if bought at a value otherwise it will become even more mediocre than a value pick.

Vivek,

you are 100% correct on this.
Its the price which determines how much you will gain on a stock.
The same stock can be bought at different rate, to the advantage of the buyer, and the volatility that we observe in the market these days, this is more than true.

Well, Shashi I work with a limitation.I dont understand bisiness models, growth rates and stuff like that. So, i work on a payback basis approach. I try to recover the difference between the price I pay and the book value of the stock in a certain period.
That to me is my payback period. i admit i am a very very conservative investor but has yielded me in all times.... so cant and also dont intend to change my approach.

Regards,

Vivek

If you are Pure value investor better look for big trends or structural changes. When things chages structurally(and they do), value investment becomes growth investment and can do wonders. Another virtue required is patience.
