Nokia cannot play the high-value game, the game where software is the turf and not hardware. Nokia started off as low-cost producer for value-for-money phones and built its value chain in accordance to the same positioning. Using the existing value chain for a different positioning is proving fatal,it will only go down the drain.

Steve Jobs had a bunch of uncharitable things to say about Bill Gates in his autobiography.

However, they made peace in his death bed and the letter Gates wrote to Jobs was one of his prize possessions in his final days.

Gates will always be remembered as the ultimate geek and Jobs as the visionary.

The latest geek in town however is Zuckerberg

so if a company has been doing very well for years and years and is in fact a market leader all this time, is going through a bad patch or loses its leadership, then it should be rejected and not touched ever again?

In the case of nokia, the leadership was lost due to some technology changes and it can be argued at this stage, that while leadership has been lost, nokia still has potential to upgrade technologically and at some stage even come up something greater.

Or, it could just make phones that use android like all the others..atleast nokia had original designs , while samsung has copied everyone's technologies merely because it was an OEM supplier and manufacturer and it had access to blueprints.

As per Peter Lynch

If you're thinking about investing in a troubled industry, buy the companies with staying power. Also, wait for the industry to show signs of revival. Buggy whips and radio tubes were troubled industries that never came back

BTW here is one article on the pros of investing into Nokia which does not consider the angle we were debating on so far.

Congratulations - A Nokia Bankruptcy Is Baked Into The Price Already  Link

This sounds like my Piramal bet. Smile
