How do they define oil reserves? Is that all the crude oil already discovered in KG/Cauvery basins or are they calculating based on discoveries that might happen in the future?

This might answer your query:

In fact it was the first time that the RIL chairman referred to the oil and gas reserves which the company has been accumulating across continents spanning countries such as India, Columbia, Yemen, Oman, East Timor, Egypt and Russia.

“Currently, the global “2P” gross reserve base of Reliance is estimated at about 4.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent,” Mukesh Ambani told shareholders at the 33rd annual general meeting.

2P in oil industry parlance means there is a 50% chance of the estimate being accurate.

“We have set for ourselves a target of 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent of 2P gross reserves globally,” the CMD said.

"The pathway to this target will also involve engaging in several world-class partnerships and will place Reliance well on the path to be a global energy major," Ambani said.

For RIL shareholders, the oil and gas exploration and production is on the threshold of "unprecedented value creation" for Reliance and is going to "fundamentally transform Reliance's earnings growth profile."

OK thanks. According to NELP policy, Govt owns some percentage (50% I think, not sure) of the reserves. RIL will be giving away Govt's share after they recover their initial investment in exploration and drilling.

So RIL gets $175 billion over a period of something like 20 - 30 years (before production stops). That's a cool $6 - $8 billion a year added to the topline at these rates.

2P in oil industry parlance means there is a 50% chance of the estimate being accurate.

I wouldn't worry about this too much. 2P means Proven + Probable reserves. Over the next 20 something years, technology to pump out the oil from existing reserves will improve.

So you would still be holding RIL & Aban in FY 2027, right? By that time Shiv-Vani however would be Aakash-Vani.

2027? I can't look beyond 2 days. All I know is that I will be watching the India - Australia match tomorrow.

understanding both the power of compound return and the difficulty getting it is the heart and soul of understanding a lot of things

You can't just go around with a shovel and dig for oil in a foreign country without giving their Governments a percentage.
