For those interested to know more on CDMs, here is a good website of a consultant: Indo-German Energy Programme

  1. There is a large potential for renewable energy generation from agriculture wastes, hydro and wind.
  2. Thermal electricity generation and industry offer countless opportunities to improve energy efficiency, for example, regarding coal-fired power plants and of the transmission and distribution system.
  3. The chemical industry and aluminum production allow reductions of industrial greenhouse gases with high warming potentials.

GTZ CDM-India is receiving a number of queries every day from various sectors to develop CDM projects in India. The India market is vibrant and growing day by day. Project promoters are ready to invest making the time ripe for international buyers of CERs to invest in India.

Here is some more on CDMs:

The global carbon market grew to nearly $22 billion in the first nine months of this year, more than doubling in value over the previous year with China and India leading the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) market, according to the World Bank.

China continues to dominate the project-based market with 60 % of the volume of projects transacted, down from 73 per cent in 2005 with India next with a 15% share of the market volume, up from 3% in 2005.

This is also an interesting development:

Bharti Airtel is now entering the carbon credit venture. The partner in venture, ACME Telepower — provider of telecom sites to companies — will share 50% of its profits with Airtel.

The profit will be earned through selling carbon credits gained from sites given to the telecom company. ACME has presented a $30-40m carbon credit mandate to the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF).

The equipment enabling green house gas emission reduction is referered to as ‘green shelters’. Green shelters reduce GHG emissions by 30% and conserve power by 35% of the annual power consumption of these telecom sites.

There will be 2 KW per hour of energy savings per site. This will amount to 1.6 kg of carbon saved every hour. With 60,000 telecom sites running on this technology, there will be a total of 8,40,960 ---
tonnes of carbon savings annually.
------------------------------------------------

While these look very exciting opportunities on paper, does any of the members have more knowledge on CDMs, its viability, feasibility?

I think the Carbon credit story is for real.

Take a look at SRF's latest results. A huge % of their profits was due to sale
of carbon credits. The stock had a huge rally last year because of the caron credit potential story, and then crashed as people thought it was all
speculation. But in the last few months they have made huge profits
by selling their carbon credits.

Carbon credit is more important for industry that is competing against another industry for same product. If Soda Ash manufacturer gets CC for better technology, everybody will use better technology and get CC so tehre is not much of competitive advantage. But when Wind Power has to compete with Coal power, they really have great advantage.

Another example is brick from Fly Ash. They can give tough time to conventional birck as they can get CC.
