Topic: Short Selling in stocks? Posted: 25/Apr/2007 at 7:02pm |
Mr. Basant,
Will be extremely glad if you can explain the concept of short selling in nitty gritty. Kindly throw light on the dynamics of short selling and along with it on the dynamics of lending/borrowing of stocks.... how will it work etc.
Regards,
Vivek
P.S.-An illustration can be extremely useful.

Hi,
Short selling has the potential to change the various dynamics. With short selling permitted, the concept of dividend yield will be no longer important. As yields on securities lent likely to exceed dividend yield. As a corollary to this, even growth stocks will become value stocks as the lenders in them will command substanially higher rates compared to general stocks. This in turn may fuel a spurt in the growth stocks. Also imagine the market size, as all the shres that have been issues can be potentially lent. So, given the market capitalisation, which is greater than the GDP the market size of this market can be terrific. Also imagine the potentiality for the intermediaries. And also understand its impliaction on the banking industry. This can kill the business of lending in the capital markets. As now one need not borrow money to buy stocks, one can directly borrow stocks. So, given all this, I intended to get more into this.
Regards,
Vivek

Companies with a large short interest very often have been revealed as frauds or semi- frauds – not the one my friend runs. Over the years, I’ve probably had 100 ideas of things to short and I would have eventually been right [on almost all of them]. But [because it’s so hard to get the timing right,] I likely wouldn’t have made much money and there would have been a huge opportunity cost. Someone who’s running a fraud is probably very good at it and can keep it going a long time. I would never put money with a short fund – not because I have any problem with it ethically, but because I question if they could make money over time |

Hi Basant, I am not sure, whether if its appropriate to post this query here. BSE vs NSE 1. Sometimes some stocks trade in BSE and NSE with different CMP for some duration, whats the reason , will a trader get any benefit from this? 2. If we buy a stock in BSE, can we sell that in NSE? Thanks

Yes, you can sell in either on the stock indexes..but usually its very difficult to find out the difference just in time to sell it on a profit. Thats what is arbitrage..
