But I am not yet competent enough to start an investment right from scratch, based on my own research. I would rather take the top man...research his success rate and his methods....take his best pick...then research that pick as best as I can...and then finally, decide if it is worthwhile investing in it or not

Om to some extent I think you are on the right track unless you make money it is very difficult to get conviction. Initially I used to spend hours looking at the kind of companies mutual funds have bought and then I used to zero down on the best available stock. That was one way of developing faith in the stock (Big brother buying always sounds good) but these days I am not bothered about whether X is buying or not.I remember how tough it was for me to hold on to Tv 18 when the BIG BULL bought Tv today. People around me said "kuch toh hoga" but then sometimes you get it right and that was one of those.
The best way to develop conviction is to talk straight to the company. Generally people do not lie and we should take them at face value. I try to talk to all the companies that I invest in.There is no substitute to hearing it from the horse's mouth. But then we cannot ask them questions like what would the fy08 eps be like.. they prefer to talk more from the business point of view and personally to me that matters more then the EPS for the coming year.
BTW moneycontrol is coming in for a complete overhaul and the guys are testing it. The newer version is expected to be far far better then the older one.ALso Indiaearnings should be more exciting this results season.

Thank you Reetesh for your words.
Basant ji, excellent statements there. I gives me more confidence now. Actually. I dont have any kind of access or any connections at high levels, to go right to the management of a company and ask them the questions I want to ask. That is why I make do with whatever I got. Thank you for sharing your experience with me.
And I would keep a lookout for MC. For TV18, I would really want them to succeed at entertainment. That is where a lot of TV revenues come from. The only thing TV18 is missing as of now in the media business is entertainment and really hope they get it right, as entertainment is a tough nut to crack,

You are wrong here. No one needs connections to talk. If the questions are genuine, honest and not related to stock price movements I am sure every management would talk.

Well, let's hope so. I shall try talking to a management...maybe of a small company to start with...like Nucleus. Can you share please Basant ji...how did you for the first time talk to the management of a big company...what was the whole process like(considering you didnt know the management or anyone in it personally before that). When you are free, you can reply...no hurry!

Send them a well drafted email with some questions stating that you wish to call them up to find out about these specifics in a company. If they answer back then no problem or else call up the next day. But first send them an email that makes them mentally prtepared to answer. In that mail just briefly state why you need that information maybe for the media or as an investor or what ever. Many companies have designated investor relation officers and it is best to get to them since it is their job to reply back.

As long-term investors, we are part-owners and have a right to seek information.
Stock Exchange/Company’s own website indicates contact person details with name, tel, fax numbers. They mention Company Secretary’s name too. He could be the first contact point for us. If the organisation is large, then there could be separate Investors Relationship Cell officer and/or a PRO.
I liked Basant jee’s way of approaching by first sending e-mails.
For the benefit of the uninitiated, I would urge Basante jee, to post a draft sample message here on this thread (one could get some feel from the polished language/tone of e-mail message).
Companies do not give any forward looking EPS targets etc...but they do answer queries generally. Of course, one shouldn't be asking questions like: 'why the stock price is not going up' or 'what is the target price'.
While this is the direct approach…. I nowadays have begun trying to gather information/feedback from employees, vendors, subcontractors, transporters, employees, competitors. It is pretty tough work…but I guess it would pay-off in the long-term.
Another place for gathering latest happenings about the sector could be the concerned business associations/trade councils. Though I’ve not yet explored the same.
Forum members, please post your views/experiences...

But do we get responses? Couple of year back I wrote to Cosmo Films recently to Cera sanitaryware, but the response did not come. I did not call them, which probably I will do next time I am doing this activity.
