You are right, age is one important variable.  As one ages and shoulders more responsibility along the way, ones risk preferences and the ability to bear risk invariably changes.   This typically manifests itself in the form of differences in asset allocation across different classes such as FD, Insurance, Real Estate, Equities, etc.

Since we do not know what % of each respondent's net worth is in stocks, it is hazardous to draw any inference regarding net worth just by looking at these numbers.  For all we know, some people may  have shifted from  equity into the red hot real estate since 2003.   I know a  couple of friends  who did that in Bangalore  in 2003 and, believe me,  they are laughing all the way to the bank!!
