I am an NRI. After lot of study, I decided to buy term insurance of 1 crore for me and wife in my visit to India. I contacted all possible insurance companies on their websites. And few of them contacted me when I was in India in January 2010. But most of the insurance companies representatives were unaware of my requirement of term insurance and thought that I needed an endowment plan or ULIP. Most were trying to explain advantage of ULIP.
Through personal contacts, I contacted some companies. The responses and results were as follows:
1. Birla Sunlife - Accepted application only to be returned after 15 days saying that they cannot give term insurance to NRI. Suggested to buy ULIPS instead.
2. Aviva - Accepted application, did medical tests and had to wait for 2 months only to find out that their request of 50% additional premium. I asked reason for additional premium, which they didnt give. Finally I informed them that I do not wish to take it. So they returned premium amount by cheque. They used premium amount for 3 months.
3. Metlife - Lowest premium of all insurers. Accepted application, did medical. Again requested for some medical tests after 15 days since they missed some tests. Kept waiting for 2 months to finally say that they cannot give term insurance to NRI. Suggested ULIP, which I refused. Informed them that I dont want to take the product. Waiting for premium amount till date.
4. LIC - Accepted application, did medical. Kept waiting for 3 months to find that they needed some column to be filled up (address in India for NRI, which was anyway available in furnished documents). They also requested all pages of passport copies and to be signed by me, which I did 3 weeks back. Still waiting for result........
In effect, I find that insurance companies in India donot wish to sell term insurance.

You are right Kailash. I also could not get the term insurance. These people don't respond. I think its all about money. The brokers' commission is very less in term insurance and hence they do not sell it.
Success... at all cost.

I am NRI and have term insurance policy from Max Newyork life since few years now. I also faced similar issues which you highlighted above especially since most of the companies do not offer term plans to NRIs. Even in case of Max, though I got the cover, it took quite a bit of time. I am told it is normal for all companies to take time for approving term insurance policy. Since term insurance is pure risk product, the application has to go through more checks and higher level approvals compared to other products. This reinforced my belief that term products are the best for individuals as insurance companies need to be extra careful and tend to benefit least from term plan compared to other products.

Also, I had to be very stub-born with my agent on resisting his sales pitch for other products. After a while, he realised that I was not going to take anything other than term plan and agreed to procees my application. He also made it clear that this was not the kind of deal he does normally but this time done with me with fond hope that he will get better deals from me in future. So far he has not got so called better deal from me.

By the way, my first preference was LIC but I was also told that LIC does not offer term plan to NRI.

Health Insurance provides various health cover benefits to you and your family. You don’t need to worry about medical expenses for good medical treatment if you have health insurance. It gives you financial stability against unforseen medical expenses. You will get tax benefits under Section 80D of The Income Tax Act.

I have gone through health plans offered by Max Bupa which is the new specialist Health Insurance Provider in India. Its health policies have been designed keeping in mind health needs of individuals & Indian families. It offers many benefits which include maternity benefits, new born child coverage, cashless facility at top hospitals etc. It also offers employee health insurance plan that provide medical benefits to employees and their families.

For those who are looking for health insurance, I would suggest them to check Max Bupa's health insurance plans in addition to other insurance providers. Compare their policies and choose a plan what suits your health cover needs.

I have seen incident where a person met with fatal accident which made him lose his job/income and spend large part of savings in treatment. There is no use of Term insurance here as person is alive but unable to generate income required to sustain family needs. A pure accidental and disability which is relatively cheaper policy is best suitable for such unfortunate incidents. This should be purchased separately instead of taking riders along with other policies which are usually much expensive compared to standalone policy.

Good point.

Any idea about how much the premium cost for such insurance policy of say 25 lacs??

A rough calculation of premium for 25 Lakh sum assured comes at around Rs. 1264 per annum. This is very basic policy, you can add some features if you want. you can also calculate premium per your age/profession etc. here on oriental insurance site.
I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.
