For Kotak shareholders,Kotak and GS have come together for mega-billion deal of Hutch.Their client is Li Ka Shing of Hutchison Whampoa. No matter who wins the deal,Kotak definitely wins.I remember Kulmanji was saying to discuss these investment banking deals. There is lot of action here.

Disclosure: Dont have any Kotak shares.

Devesh jee has summed this investment banking business very crisply.

Which are the listed majors in this field....Kotak Mah, JM, ICICI????? Maybe more knowledgable members could comment more & start a separate thread on this sector.

Invest Banking is good for a career....but if we have to got to them for raising capital plans it is really bad idea...

I will tell u this story which i heard from a top guy.......

Now there was this cab company somewhere ....may be Indonesia.........i think ...so they wanted to increase their business and wnated to raise capital for expansion....so they went to this great I-Bank.........

The I- Bank gave them this advice...---to take a loan in US at the interest rate of 12% .............

but in Indonesia it was 19% for the same loan for long term......

Now the only worry was if the Indonesian currency crashed in the short term for ...bu the govt assured them that nothing would happen.......and that there was no threat to the currency..........

SO this cab company took this great advice....and took the loan for 8 years...$$$$$$$$$$$

For the next two years....everything went well ....good profits were made by  the Cab company...........

One fine morning there was a depreciation in Indonesian currency....by .50%.........

..due to this the companies debt rose to a very high level....

the short term 7%...did look  expenisve but  the 12 %  Interest in US  currency  ...proved to be a fatal for their small business..............

Ultimately the company declared bankruptcy..........but they did one good thing ....they took the I Bank down with them.........

I bankers can give u a wrong advice too..................

But I banking is great ...it depends what sector of I banking one is interested in..............

Does JM Financial fall under this category? JM-MS have lots of merchant banking activities.

Nimesh Kampani is well known for his acumen like Hemendra-bhai of DSP-ML.

If you look at shareholding pattern other than promoters, it has some big names:

Sr. No. Name of the shareholder No. of shares Shares as a % of total number of shares
1  FID Funds Mauritius Ltd 758529  2.53
2  Tiger Global L P 1644300  5.48
3  Blue Ridge Ltd Partnership 2062534  6.88
4  Blue Ridge Offshore Master Ltd Partnership 1264133  4.21
5  Tiger Global Ltd 415800  1.39
6  Azim Hasham Premji 875000  2.92
 Total 7020296  23.4

Nimesh Kampani was selling Reliance Petroleum like crazy when it listed at Rs 90. We all know what happened after that

Just read this note and let me know what these guys were basing their advice on? See anyone can go wrong with his analysis on stocks but for someone who tries to sell the stock to investors when a company is 2 years away from commercial production is certainly doing no good.
