Dear Friends,

For several years in a row the TED XI stocks have demonstrated tremendous outperformance and the last quarter was no different.  The biggest conviction payoff was Hawkins Cooker a company that seems to have got its act together. If the promoters of this company act rationally then there is a long way to go for this stock.

This has been a consumer led bull market and many at TED have got the big picture correct. A strange dichotomy in this market is while several consumer companies have gone on to make a new high several times over the previous one some solid consumer names like United Spirits and Pantaloon Retail have lagged the market clearly indicating that this market is willing to pay for quality earnings only.

The dichotomy also indicates that the consumer stocks have some more way to go because unless there is a mania these stocks would not collapse and if there is a mania everything relating to consumer should go through the roof which is not happening.

But we are playing for earnings and not a bubble because an investor who looks for bubble in the market is like the man who killed the hen that laid the golden egg. It is better to count the eggs each day then to kill the hen in selfish greed but who are we to define what the markets will do we can just participate in the game and maybe at the right opportune time fold the cards and go to the next table something which not many have been able to do.

Is it possible to give the TED XI portfolio performance on a yearly/half-yearly basis? i.e. How has the overall portfolio done vis-a-vis say the Sensex year-to-date? That would make understanding the performance of the portfolio over time much clearer.

One query as well . I have seen for past year and half HDFC Bank is beating HDFC in earnings growth . is this going to remain same way going forward or we will see things changing ?

Assuming the growth story to continue what would a better bet among the top 5 consumer stocks, if one wishes to invest a lumpsum on one scrip.

Note: The P/E/G is compared against the last 5years CAGR just to ascertain how costly are them if they maintain this rate only, so if future growth expectations are higher the stocks would only be cheaper than these.

Need opinion from the seniors at TED.

I guess you skipped Zydus Wellness, which get included on 31-Mar-10. Also please go through the topic http://www.theequitydesk.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3238&FID=49&PR=3 - Why not to look for new ideas – always which may provide some insightful thoughts about your query.

Awesome performance Basant ji!

I have a question that I hope you would kindly answer. Amongst the TED XI, which one in your opinion has the highest potential over the 2-3 year horizon? Sorry, if it a stupid question! Basically I need to reinvest some some amount and I am looking for the strongest basket!

This is an example of excellent performance. I have seen most of the companies are great brands or owners of great brands.
Still, would like to revisit a commoditised business like Voltamp. I am not sure this will be very interesting going forward. Would like to hear other opinions.

[QUOTE=basant] and maybe at the right opportune time fold the cards and go to the next table something which not many have been able to do.

Congrats and thanks Basantji. Anybody who had conviction enough in you/TED( in the early days of TED) and have tried to utilise whatever one has learned on TED,should still be amongst the winners even if he does not identify the ooportune time and gets a bit early/late.The trick will always be to identify the next possible winning table in the early stages when the seats/chairs are cheap and empty and nobody understands that trick better than you. so, please do hint towards the table. The able teddies, am sure, will surely find a chair for themselves.

Thanking you once again

Thank you, as I say ideas can be borrowed or even stolen but not conviction that makes investing even more difficult then it actually is.

It is easy to buy a stock at the right time but somehow I have realised that one has to let go off the stuff at the opportune time as well Warren Buffett worked in an environemet where stocks were not discounting 40% CAGR hence the issues of getting out at the right time did not bother him as much as it would to investors in emerging markets.

More-over once the bubble starts building it is important not to sell too early or hold it too long. I wish I could have put some more sense into this statement but that is what makes me paranoid and keeps me in the world of educated guesswork if ever that can be of some help.

Bubbles can rarely be analyzed by PEs and valuation excesses but the tops (or bottoms) can be evaluated reasonably well by the behavior of the people around you, don't you think?

I am no expert in finding tops but one should have a comfort level with the price. I you can't think of buying at those valuation, start counting the days when you need to sell. At the end of the day peaceful sleep is most important of all

I think it should not be too difficult to recognise bubble, though not bubble top. Signs could be historically high valuations for broad market, indexes creating record highs very often, huge divergence from 200 DMA and behaviour of people around you.

Nowadays, I do a small test. In any social gathering or conversation, I initiate something related to stocks. I have noticed that, nowadays, people are not interested in market. They somehow change the topic.

So, bubble needs to wait!!Tongue

Basantjee,

Would there be any way to identify the bubbles as and when it happens OR will it be easy to get swayed by "sustainable" consumption boom and all news flow? I really hope that nothing reaches 100 times PE as Infy of 2000 as then despite solid growth returns will be muted for couple of years.

But can the bubble happen in particular stories? Like IT in 1999-2000 and consumption for 2011-12-13-14????

Basant ji, I have a question, if you would be kind enough to answer. What are your thoughts on combining trading with long term investment - that is, can we trade on a stock that we are betting on the long term?

Has anyone else on this forum tried it? What has been your experience.

What you are doing is the famous Peter Lynch cocktail party theory.

I read that Broking companies are making losses. Even RJ promoted Alchemy closed its broking arm recentely.

Can we say that, when broking companies start making profit, bubble builds up

Well said Basantji.
In my case, I was holding HDIL too long and saw it crumbling from 1400 levels to around 100.
Again I became panicky when SATYAM was hovering around 20 levels and I sold it for 18.

in an inflationary environment consumption and fmcg companies have the ability to raise prices and thus protect their margins which the mkt has discounted ,now that inflation may come down and interest rates start coming down beaten down stocks in the capex cycle may start outperforming and the consumption and fmcg stocks may have a more sedate time.so would it make sense to invest in good quality stocks in the capex cycle?has that time come?

I think it would to add one more column in the report to show the price at the beginning of the year.

Do we have plans to update the list based on the current scenarios as this list is almost 5 yrs old.

Sir,

Logically speaking, I tend to agree with you that it is time for stocks related to consumption theme to take a breather and, atleast for some time, stocks related to capex cycle to shine.

However, I also agree with a general belief that stocks hitting new highs when broad market is in long corrective  / consolidation phase would continue to outperform when next bullish phase resumes. We have seen about a year long consolidation phase. So going by above belief, we should witness strong gains in stocks related to consumption theme when bullish phase resumes.

Hence, I think it will be better to stick to proven theme.

Hello everybody,

Congratulations Sir for updating ‘The Equitydesk Report Card June 2011’. Subject to correction, this happens to be a quarterly update after the Mar/April 2011 one’.

While going through the previous report card threads, my reactions would be that of having frequent report cards, an alternative etc, as couldn’t relate to stocks that were picked up years ago. The same are being repeated in this thread as well. However, having gone through it, the following is my take that may help newbies.

Ø           This is a concentrated portfolio style comprising of 11 stocks only.

Ø           Basantji (Master TED) believes that the existing stocks here have still growth steam within them.

Ø           The stocks here would not be replaced normally, unless one gets a stock that fits in the criteria of stock selection: Market cap <below Rs 1000 crores, Consistent RoE that is growing etc and more importantly they would out beat the expected growth of the present stocks as it’s a ‘buy & hold’ portfolio. This portfolio doesn’t believe in churning unless surely warranted.

Ø           It becomes difficult to commit whether one stock could replace another unless there is a solid reason. Hence the silence.

Basantji, hope this is roughly correct.

Hi prudent investor:

i saw your calculation on zydus and want to know how you calculate peg ratio.
in moneycontrol i can see p/e is 38 today on sept 3rd and growth as u calculate is 2011 is 25%, so it is more than >1, also if u take cagr revenue growth that is 40%, i.e than also it is = 1, could you or any senior please tell hw the number peg is .60. Confused

* P/E 38.31

Posted By: prudentinvestor
Date Posted: 04/Sep/2011 at 9:31pm
This was based of FY12 Forward P/E of 25.45 based on expected EPS of 22 for FY12E and the price of Rs 570 on 1st July 2011.

For a 22 FY12E EPS, growth over TTM EPS of 15.22, the growth rate is 45%

Based on that, the PEG comes to 0.56 ( Forward P/E / Forward Growth)

For growth companies trailing P/E is meaning less. And Moneycontrol data are not trustworthy, switch to Edelweiss ( Capitaline Database) or ETIG data
