Hi Guys,
Thank you for joining in. The feedback that we have received over the past 3 days has overwhelmed me. The site is already being rated in the top 2 percentile and my sense is that we could help it become VERY BIG...  VERY SOON.

Guys we have come here from various walks of life some would be investors, others professionals of other field and from the feed back I got there were quite a number of people who were students trying to understand the complex world of investing.

It would be really great if everyone left a small introduction on this section something like :
- Name
- Age
- Location
- Occupation
- Interests
- Investing styles - Trader/Investor etc etc
- Investing Legends - Could be Buffet to Neff.

To start with here is my introduction
 -Name : Basant Maheshwari
- Age : 34 years and still growing older with each passing day
- Location : Kolkata (Salt Lake)
- Occupation : Financial Consultant, Academics, Graphologist
- Interests : Reading books on people who have and who want to make
it BIG. Generally I prefer reading on finance.

- Investing styles - Very very long term investor with extremely
concentarted positions. The 3 significant weighted stocks that I hold in
my portfolio are Pantaloon, Titan and Voltas. I have elaborately
indicated my investing strategy in http://www.theequitydesk.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=177&FID=29&PR=3 - investing strategy in this thread

- Investing Legends - Peter Lynch. "Buy what you see"  is the mantra
I follow. To me Graham is more theoritical and Buffet too difficult to
emulate.I do use Buffet's investing strategies and thoughts though.

Please enter as much information as you can, there's no pressure..

Thanks everyone and enjoy yourself!

Regards,

Basant

Here is mine:

31 years old, currently working in a sw company in Blore.
Would consider myself an amateur investor, started in 2001, got burnt
in the dotcom fall, so it was like a baptism by fire.
Stayed off the markets next 2 years, and since 2004 have been investing
regularly. Have since recovered all my losses and made profits as well, so
its been quite a journey!

Trying very hard(the key word here is "trying )  to become a value
investor, follow Ramesh Damani on his chats everyweek, (in fact how i came
to know of this site is also through that chat only, when one chatter mentioned about this site). Through him i have learnt the virtue of patience and conviction. Currently mainly innvested in Mcdowell and UB holdings as my core portoflio, and GM Breweries and California Software
as my speculative/potential multibaggers.

I read a lot, have read Beating the Street and One up on Wall Street by Lynch, The wisdom of crowds(another great concept, a must read),
currently reading "Warren Buffet - The making of an American Capitalist"
by Roger Lowenstein - another fabulous book.

Basant, just 3 days into this site and i really like it. Have read  a lot
of your past postings, and was really amazed to read your
40-to-1350 pantaloon story. Great stuff! I wish i can do something
like that one day!

Hi

My sincere thanks to all of you who have tried to put this work in some positive light. I hope that this process will try and create an online community of analytical investors who will never buy anything without asking why?

Bharat Ji Great to see you working at TCS. I find that all the techies want to know a great deal of finance and investing compared to their peers from the B'com background. . It is great to see our friends from the engineering fraternity wanting  to analyse. Perhaps the kind of analytical skills you guys develop during your engineering career comes in handy. This is something  which never occured to me until I saw the member list in detail one day.

Hope I am wrong since I am a commerce grad myself.

Hi Everyone,

I am Rajeev, 32 yrs of age,  an electronics & communication engineer, working for an engineering company. I am new to investing and got to know about this site through messageboard on moneycontrol.com.

This site is fabulous and worth spending time. Thanks Basant and all of you.

When ever I used to watch CNBC, other investing gurus on other TV channel or some sites, keeps wondering what is initial level of competency being expected from a novice investor. Always used to fascinate with the talk but never got courage to invest in stock based on their discussion and recommendation.

Now, got a site, which talk investing in context and perspective and explain lot a bit which used to alien for me previously.

I started investing few months back hoping that I will make 20-30% gain and exit (whatever time a stock takes to get this 20-30% return). With this in mind I invested in-

ACC, AMTEKAUTO, BHARATFORGE, GUJAMBCEM, GSPL, HINDALCO, IOB, MADHUPRO, MARUTI, ORCHIDCHEM, RANBAXY, REIAGRO, RELIANCE, SATYAMCOMP, MPHASISBFL, POLARIS, SUNDARMFIN and TATACHEM.

Now, after reading on this site about benefit of concentrated 3-5 stocks, multi-baggers, cyclic vs. non-cyclic, commodity stock etc., trying to figure out making a stocks portfolio for long-term investment.

Hope this site keep benefiting me in this direction.

Best regards to all of you.

Rajeev

- Investing styles - I started with Warren buffest Style (own for life time) but then influced by RJ. Now I have my own policy/picks. My philosophy is like this.. one's weath should be divided in to ..mother (protector), be father (bread earner), youth (latest fashion) and kid (promise). I explain each here.
Mother (protector) - Income funds/Bank FDs
Father (earner) - MIP
Youth (latest fashion) - equity mutual fund
Kid (promise) - mid/small cap equity

One shall distribute investment to these 4, as per thier risk profile. Meaning.. if u are young, one should have hight waitege on last 2. and like wise.

Nice to see so many Ramesh Damani fans out here :-)
The best part i like about the theequitydesk is that its more focussed
on the ideas behing investing in a stock, and how to evaluate a company,
as compared to tips and mundane articles about the sensex/nifty movements
and its ranges, the current trends, etc etc which is what most other
financial websites focus mainly on.

Hi, I am a recent entrant to this site.

Am based in Chennai.  And a female.  And I am 56.  And I enjoy everything about equity investment.

My biggest success - kept buying good stocks when the markets were in misery in 2001 - 03.  Am reaping the benefits now.  Eg:  M & M @ Rs.80, SCI @ 15, Tata Power @ 100, Apollo Hospital @ 80, SBI @ 215

My inspiration - my young son who would ask for bluechip stocks for birthday presents!!

My small failure - I did not always listen to him.  So missed out on stocks like CRISIL, BEL, Pidilite and such.

My plan - to get into wealth creating stocks and put the wealth to good use in my own lifetime.

Hi,

I am new member on this site. I am an IT Consultant and working in Accenture and most of the time I am out of country. I have been studying the Market Dynamics since last four yrs and survived 2 severe crashes. I started of as a shrt term investor ans seriously turning into a long term investor. Some of my multibaggers are Rajesh Exports, Engineers India, Era Constructions, though I sold them at an early stage before they reached their peaks. I am trying to become  a serious long term investor.(One of the reason is I cant pay attention to daily market movements because of my job ..)

I have given more weightage to Reliance and Infy... I do feel the growth in infy will slow down over a period of time and reliance will grow more rapidly thogh I cant compare them in the same league..

Happy Investing..

Hi,

I am 28 from Ahmedabad.
I am here not to with the intention to earn money but to learn the market.
I do believe that if I will learn the market trends money will automatically follow. i spend more of my time in research rather than investing.

I strongly believe in long term investing and i strongly oppose investing in penny stocks.

Hi,

I am Shashi s. Praharaj

I am 50 years old and probably the oldest member of the forum.
I am working in a public sector Bank for last 26 years.

I have worked in around 10 states and in many capacities. I was inducted to IT in 1992, through an internal selection process and for last 7 years I am posted in Mumbai.
Currently I am the IT head of Mumbai Region of our Bank.

I have done my M.Sc. after which I joined the Bank. I did my LLB after that.
While in Bank, I did my MBA (Finance).

Though I am into so many things, my interest is in stock market. I was first inducted into the stock market in 1982, when I applied for GNFC public Issue. I have seen many ups and downs in the stock market and for a brief period I was out of the market. I lost a lot of money during Harshad Mehta clash and learned a lot about market dynamics. After that I remained out of the market for 3-4 years. Then I realised, that by quitting the market, I am proving myself to be an escapist. If I have lost in the market, it is the market which can makeup my loss and make my fortune. By staying away, not only, I have already lost, there is no chance of winning in future. Now I am cautious and I am winning. With friends like Basant and Internet, I beleive I am in the right track.

My style of investing now is a little different. I have two kinds of portfolio. One in which blue chips are there. They may be as little as 5shares or maybe max 300 of a company. I don't sell these shares. Sometimes I add 5 or 10 shares of a new blue chip company, when I have some extra money. There is a principle. These shares can be sold in emergency, that is for children's education or hospitalisation.

The other portfolio is for real investing. I prefer potential multi baggers in this category. I could only get one real multibagger so far in this category, that is Kirloskar Brothers. Now I am invested in  TTML, Gitanjali, TV-18, Orchid Chemicals, AB Novo and Bharthi Shipyard. As I don't have big money, I have limited no of shares also, and I am gradually adding.

One of my passions is reading good books. I read any good book, I get. In half an hour time I decide whether the book is worth reading or not and proceed accordingly.

I am also interested in art and especially  paintings. I have done a six month evening course in Appreciation of Art from National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. To be frank this course I enjoyed the most, and it was a sort of eye opener for me. I can not draw a line, but I can distinguish from a bad painting and a good painting.

I hope I have written enough about me.

I am really thankful to Basant for making this site. Its like a addiction for me now. I don't feel comfortable, if I don't see the site at least once a day.

Om Shivaya is right SIr, you are indeed an exception on this forum. We may find many people experienced in different areas but to have undergone formal education for each of these three different streams (arts, commerce and science) is indeed praiseworthy. It is an honour to have you with us.

I am Vijayalakshmi Natarajan, from Bangalore. I took VRS from RBI due to my perennial ill health. I found an engaging work (started initially as a hobby, but later turned out to be an engaging work)in trading stocks. The challenge is really exciting and pleasantly rewarding. Though long term investing is ideal, it is difficult to embrace it wholeheartedly, to be frank with. About 25% of my investment is not long term and perhaps that is why I see the work quite interesting and exciting. The one thing I am particular about is that i am not governed by the fear-factor under any circumstances. So every night I go to sleep, I sleep well. Finally I would like to share my impression about this site. In this site, there is no worshipper of any one, though we are a great nation of worshippers, worshipping anyone who would like to do some good but would ultimately become a prey before the worshippers. I wish the members of this site (most of whom appear to be stunningly youthful in their age) would continue to hold their good habit of worshipping nobody.

Here is a Brief Introduction of Myself:

Name - Jagannathan

Age -  30

Location - Chennai

Occupation - Software Engineer

Interests - Basically a guy interested in Current Affairs, Economics, Public Finances, Investment, Social Trends and related topics . Spend my spare time, reading books, learning about history,  browsing internet, learning new facts about the world, spirituality/philosophy, movies ,  music  and window shopping.

Investments - Very difficult to summarise in a single line so elaborating here.

Been investing last 6 years... still would consider myself to be a rookie only. Basically a funda investor (but i do try to watch charts if i can make sense)... invest for SMT , MT , LT (Short-Medium Term, Medium Term and Long Term). I am more of a contrarian investor, like to be in a good scrip when no one cares... so mostly like to analyse investment ideas which are not that fashionable or the hottest. Generally not comfortable with crowds and jostling so kind of dislike such investment ideas which are the hottest and considered the "In" thing/fashionable thing.

And I give lot of emphasis on qualitative features concerning any investment idea - like promoter background, govt policies on a sector, consumer/tech trends etc.

And i must add, i use the word "investment ideas" and not stocks - sometimes, when most stocks are fully valued/overvalued, being on cash/bank deposits is a better investment idea.

Investing Legends - I admire a huge number of them, so diff to put in one line... but among living personalities of present times, I very much admire Mr Marc Faber.

Favourite Lines -  A lot of them but I think I like these two lines the most 1) "Competition is Injurious to your wealth" 2) "It is the Darkest before the dawn"

Investment : Still searching the style though it is for long term. Generally prefer growth over value as of now. Have been seeing markets for last 15 years. But lost more money than made. Trying hard to build conviction in my decisions and stick to them.
Regret: Have not been able to fully capitalise even this "once in a generation" bull market.
Looking forward to game changing investments...

Tasty Bite - I entered this stock over 2 years ago (in the mid 20's). The stock has since run-up/retraced its moves a few times and is now in the mid-60s. When I analyzed the management team and their history at execution, I felt that the company (as against the stock) had potential to grow into a large player in the packaged ethnic food business. While the company has taken a longer time than I would like to get to where it is now, I believe it is now at an inflection point with enough critical mass to take it to the next level.

Kopran - A company in distress but I believe the turnaround potential is substantial. The strength of the foreign investors on the board lends strength to my thesis. While the Indian promoters may not necessarily have the best track record with respect to investing public, I believe Clearwater will make sure the restructuring is completed successfully.

Kerala Ayurveda is another company I believe has not be fully appreciated by the market. They have been making the right moves in terms of hiring people and striking alliances. A matter of time before they make it big?

To be clear about my investing strategy, I have part of my money in mutual funds (equally divided between indexed and actively managed).

Here is my info

Name: Victor
Age: 30
Location: New York
Profession: Working for a large UK based I-Bank in Technology

Investing History: I started out by punting(as opposed to investing) with a small amount of money from my father, during the 1991-92 ipo boom. After a few hits & misses, I had to shut shop and concentrate on studies. I graduated out of IIT Bombay in '98 and then missed the tech boom. My second stint started in early 2002, armed with a 10th month salary which I got as retrenchment package after my employer closed down Smile. In late 2004 I had to liquidate a majority of my holdings to finance some personal expenses(dad's house, marriage etc..). To make up for the missed profits, I decided to do a parallel leveraged play by buying a plot of land in Bangalore, financed primarily by a housing loan. Luckily for me, it all worked out and in mid 2006 I was able to sell the land and make a big profit. Since, then I have been sitting on cash and waiting for an opportunity to get back into the market.

My core holdings include L&T, Blue Star, Nucleus Software, Shanthi Gears, UTI Bank and some MF holdings. All of them were bought in 2003 or before.

My personal style & influences has evolved over time and is still evolving. After all investing is a constant learning process. Some of my weaknesses include overdiversification, chasing too many stocks and not paying much attention to the quality of management. I have burnt my fingers on stocks like Morepen labs and invested in duds like MTNL & Moser Baer.

I came across TED while researching for some stocks and the signal to noise ratio over here, compared to other message boards and communities is very high. A lot of members have been doing some quality research and contributing to the overall knowledge of TED. My thanks to all of you and please keep it up. Hopefully, I will also be able to contribute a lot to the meaningful discussion.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome.

Basant, You are right, the intensity is what matters. At the same time, intensity need not be adrenaline charged. Sometimes doing absolutely nothing and believe me its very hard to sit idle, is the better option and it requires a lot of intensity. Most of the stocks in my portfolio, Nucleus, a 25 bagger,  Blue Star a 7 bagger, Shanthi Gears, a 6-7 bagger, L&T, I don't even remember, it was one of the first stocks I bought way back in early 2002, have all given me great returns because I didn't tinker around or churn the portfolio. Ofcourse, my lethargy wasn't a result of any profound investing insight but was mostly unintentional and what the heck the market was going up like crazy anyway. But in hindsight, I think it was a very important lesson that I learnt, albeit unintentionally.

Omshivaya,
Retiring in a few years ? No way. I love investing way too much to even consider quitting Smile

Shashi,
Let me congratulate you on your analysis of YES Bank. Its one of the simplest at the same time indepth analysis of a bank that I have ever come across. I have always found banking stocks too complex to analyze.

Name:Atul
Age: 31 Years
Location:Bogota, Colombia - born and brought up at Chandigarh
Occupation:  Banking Software consultant
Interests: Football, stock market
Investing Style: first started investing in 1997... small time. burnt my fingers in pentafour, HFCL and Zee TV.
Again started in Aug 2004. 30% of my portfolio is focussed long term. 70 % is short term.
Want to change this to 75% Longterm and 25 % short term. i love to speculate short term.
From the beginning(Aug 2004) was very bullish on pantaloon, TV18  and IFlex. Sold IFlex at the wrong time(at 1000). Still think the three companies have a long way to go.
My longterm holdings currently - Pantaloon, TV 18 and Ab Nuvo.
Investing Legends: Warren Buffet and Peter Lynch. Have read a lot of books on investing .

It is the financial capital of India. FM wants to make it as an Asian hub.

Besides, top rich families stay there, e.g. Wadias, Ambanis, Kayals etc....
